Take better care of yourself this World Health Day

World Health Day

Organised each year by WHO on 7th April, World Health Day is commemorated to draw global attention to various aspects of personal and public health. On this day, we highlight a specific health related theme that has an impact on our lives on a personal and societal level. This year, World Health Day takes even more prominence since we are finally emerging into a post pandemic world. As such, it is all the more important that we spread the message of maintaining good health and simultaneously leading a balanced lifestyle.

In the shadow of a pandemic

The pandemic impacted several aspects of our daily health and well being. From job insecurities, personal loss, lowered energy levels, emotional stress and a lot more; staying locked in during the pandemic took a toll on both personal and public health. As we emerge from the shadow of this pandemic, opportunities to re-connect with people and engage in activities are once again plentiful. In re-building our lives, it is important that we are committed to strengthen our body and mind. As such, to help you take better care of yourself in a post pandemic world, we have put together a list of things you can do, and food that you can eat to boost your overall health and immunity.

Lifestyle changes that can improve your immune response

- Getting 7 to 9 hours of daily sleep is essential to sustain high energy levels and maintain productivity. From repairing damaged cells to restoring your lost energy, sleep governs a number of our physical and mental faculties. A good idea would be to opt for a smartwatch with a sleep tracker to better manage your daily sleep schedule.

- The importance of regular exercise cannot be stressed enough. Less about looking great but more about feeling healthy, exercise can not only strengthen your immune response, it can also improve your overall mood and keep stress at bay. By using a fitness tracker or smartwatch, you can optimise the way you train by tracking your daily workouts.

- We are well aware that regular hand washes can keep your protected from the virus. The same goes for safeguarding yourself from basic illnesses such as cough and common cold. Bacteria and germs mostly enter our body due to a result of unclean hands. Set periodic reminders to wash your hands to ensure that you stay healthy and protected.

- If you are dealing with high stress levels, try maintaining a gratitude journal and practice being mindful. Live in the present and keep your thoughts focused only on the current day. Smart watches with a stress monitor can help you identify areas in your life that may be negatively affecting your stress levels. By identifying and eliminating stressful triggers, you can work on staying composed and relaxed.

- Stimulants can have an adverse effect on your overall health and lead to a lowered immune response in the long run. Abstaining from stimulants such as tobacco and alcohol can help you be more resilient. Even excessive consumption of coffee, chocolates and sodas can be detrimental to your overall immunity.

Food that can boost your immunity

- Citrus fruits: With an abundance of nutrients and vitamins including vitamin A, B6 and C, citrus fruits can refresh your system, increase your energy levels and boost immune response.

- Curd: High in probiotics, both curd and yogurt can improve immunity, while simultaneously keeping indigestion and heart problems at bay.

- Green tea: From helping you reduce weight, keeping you hydrated to improving your immunity, green tea is a great alternative to traditional tea and coffee.

- Garlic: Considered to have healing properties, garlic can help you fight various disease carrying bacteria, ensuring that you stay healthy in the long run.

- Ginger: High in nutrient value, incorporating ginger in your diet can keep you protected from a number of physical ailments.

- Fresh juice: Fresh fruit and vegetable juice contain a number of nutrients that can help you fight diseases and boost your overall immune response.

Apart from such lifestyle changes, you can consider opting for a fitness tracker or smartwatch to better address your health and fitness goals.
